What delivers the high voltage to a spark plug?

Is it the actual coil, or the ignition box, so in other words does the coil take 12v input and deliver xx kv or is the coil just a delivery method for the high voltage, thanks.
Does that mean the input voltage to the coil is 12v.

12 volts go to the coil and the coil takes the 12 volts and steps it up to 40 to 60,000 volts and is sent to the distriburator where the points or electronic ignition breaker opens and closes and sends the charge to the rotor button and the rotor button sends the charge to the plug wire down to the plug.
